SHED Revives a Mid-Century Fashionable Home in Portland

Nestled in a serene, forested enclave of Portland, Oregon, the Mori Home merges mid-century trendy structure with modern minimalist sensibilities. Initially designed in 1963 by Saul Zaik, a revered determine in Pacific Northwest structure, this residence has been thoughtfully reimagined by SHED Structure & Design to fulfill the aesthetic and purposeful wants of its new homeowners: a younger household with a ardour for design.

Set on a sloped, wooded lot, the Mori Home makes a hanging but understated assertion. The property features a indifferent storage and studio, together with a teahouse pavilion, accessible through elevated decks. These parts, framed by towering timber, create a peaceable retreat that prioritizes reference to the pure atmosphere.

Zaik’s authentic blueprint was a celebration of mid-century trendy design, marked by clear geometries and the usage of natural supplies. The present transform extends this imaginative and prescient, weaving in Japanese-inspired minimalism. SHED’s method preserves the home’s architectural integrity whereas enhancing gentle, area, and the fluidity between indoors and outdoor.

Central to the redesign is the transformation of the vertical circulation. The elimination of the unique spiral staircase and loft unveils a dramatic vaulted ceiling, showcasing a nail-laminated wooden roof that pulls consideration to a brand new central skylight. This skylight, a focus of the house, infuses the dwelling areas with smooth, pure gentle and highlights the structural rhythm of the home.

On the primary flooring, the dwelling, eating, and kitchen areas circulation seamlessly alongside the southern axis, framed by expansive glazing that opens to the forest. A newly positioned fire anchors the lounge, providing panoramic views that stretch to Mount Saint Helens on clear days.

The first suite, positioned on the northern facet of the home, embodies serene luxurious. That includes a walk-in closet and a chic toilet full with a Japanese soaking tub, it combines consolation with understated magnificence. Fir slats above the suite’s entry doorways subtly diffuse gentle, sustaining a connection to the skylight above.
